Schools in Saul

Memories of two schools in Saul.

At one time there were two schools in Saul - the British School, now demolished, and the Church of England School, now closed.

Tony Ashby attended the British School from about 1935.  Mrs Jones (who lived to 100) taught the 5 year olds. The 7-10 year olds were in the next room and were taught by Miss Dangerfield, next came Miss Morris and the Head Teacher was Mr Wade.  Miss Morris (later Mrs Wilkes) lodged with Tony Ashby's mother at Malt House Farm.  They still keep in touch.

My great grandfather, Walter Henry Stockwell, was a master at the British School. Source: Post Office Directory 1856 www.historicaldirectories.org

He lived with his father Henry Stockwell, who was a grocer/draper living in Passage Road. Later Henry was living in Stonebree Cottage. If anyone has any further information about the Stockwell family in Saul I would be very pleased to hear from them.

My nan must have gone to this school because she grew up in Saul and always talks about Mr Wade as the headmaster. Her name is Doreen Lord. I dont believe she enjoyed her schooldays very much. If anybody remembers her, please get in touch
