The year of this event is believed to be 1958, when the Royal Naval Reserve coastal minesweeper HMS VENTURER (M1117) transitted the Canal to mark the opening of a new RNR Communications Centre in Gloucester. The towing vessel is the world's oldest surviving steam tug MAYFLOWER, built in Bristol in 1861 and preserved there today as a working museum vessel offering public trips.
