Photographs of the Thames and Severn Canal
By John Beatty
These photographs were probably taken by Tom Mullings, a resident of Dollar Street in Cirencester, and my great-uncle. They were taken on glass quarter-plate negatives which I have had scanned-in to computer files. The file originals have also been supplied to the archive.
Additional note, received 6 August 2009
The picnic
I am certain the part of the Thames and Severn shown is the tail of Daneway Lower Lock looking towards the road that comes down from Sapperton. Daneway basin would be beyond the lock but is too low to see and the wharf keeper's house would be out of shot to the left. The house in the middle of the photo is just to the left of the road near the foot of the hill.
The Daneway view on page 100 of The Stroudwater and Thames & Severn Canals in old photographs shows the same buildings from higher up the hill behind the attached picture.

The lock of the previous photograph, from low down at the downstream end. In 2007 I (John Beatty) could not take a photograph from the same position because it was too wet underfoot!

A picnic. I (John Beatty) have been unable to identify the location of this picture, it may have been near Cirencester as the people in the picture lived there at the time.
