Camping in Purton

Memories of the 1960s

Camping at Purton in the 1960s

These photographs of Purton and the Gloucester to Sharpness canal were taken in 1963 by my father when we were camping behind the pub at a meeting with the Camping Club of Great Britain and Ireland, Bristol and Gloucester district Association, as it was then.

Two photographs are of boats on the canal.  Of the one taken outside of the pub I can only identify one person, standing to the right of the picture with pint in hand, is my late uncle, Gilbert James from Fishponds in Bristol.  Similarly, on the one taken in the camp site just one person, the lady on the left is my late mother, Kathleen Baker of Staple Hill, Bristol.
