Sandfield Bridge

A steamer passing through

The pictures shown here are taken from a glass plate negative.  The original is sepia coloured.

A steamer is passing through the bridge and would appear to be about to moor as they have put a bow line ashore.  From the dress of those on the towpath and the two children on the swung-open half of the bridge the picture would seem to date from the late Edwardian or First World War time.  The name on the bow is too indistinct to read, but seems to be about seven characters long.  It looks as though there is a letter S on the funnel which suggests she is not one from the Bristol Steam Navigation Company.  The bridge, at that time opened in two halves.
