Salmon Fishing the traditional way on the River Severn

By Iris Capps

Salmon, is fished only by licenced fishermen nowadays.  These photographs show the traditional methods still in use, nets and putches made from withies (willow).  In the past century and earlier people made a useful contribution to the household budget by the cutting and selling of withies, both for fishermen and for basket making.

These photographs show Deryck Huby and Don Riddle fishing off the Hayward Rock, which is marked by a large buoy.  Hayward Rock is just south of Berkeley.
