The Butt family
Local watermen
By Pattie Butt
The Butt family lived in Saul for many years and as can be seen in the magazine article had a long association with the waterways.
The family of Arthur Henry Butt – Arthur was born 1913 and died 1994, he married Kathleen Watkins (b 1912 and d 1996) of Chepstow and they had two sons, Tony (b 1942) and Roger (b 1943).
Tony wrote: This is my dad, mum and only brother. Dad had a brother Bill Butt who was captain of the Pisgah, a grain barge. He also had a sister who died very young. All our family from Granddad Butt have been involved with working on the waterways. Granddad Butt worked on the old Trows. All sorts of cargo carrying and also petrol on John Harker’s petrol tankers. Many interesting stories. Dad’s other brother Walter (dec’d) has a son Ralf Butt, who farms at Riverside Farm, Frampton on Severn, with wife jean. He also was involved in work on the waterways.
