Arlingham Passage 2000
The ferry crossing to celebrate the Millennium
By Liz Young
In the year 2000 Arlingham and Newnham on Severn celebrated the millennium by opening the ferry across the Severn close by the Passage Inn. The Army came with their hovercraft and ferried people from Newnham to Arlingham and from Arlingham to Newnham.
To mark the occasion coffee mugs were produced.
My friend and I were early and crossed from Arlingham without having to wait. However, we had to queue to make the return journey as the crowd had grown so large.
If you look carefully at photo two you will see a hovercraft on the Newnham bank and the crowd is queuing to the right.
There were two hovercraft manned by the Army.
